Today marks an important milestone in Nivalit’s activities. We are proud to announce the start of the project: ‘Mentalio – a system for diagnostic and therapeutic decision support in the area of adolescent mental health based on artificial intelligence algorithms’

The aim of the project is to develop a clinical decision support system based on artificial intelligence for use in the psychiatric care of children and adolescents. The Mentalio project aims to improve the efficiency of psychiatric care for children and adolescents by providing an in-depth assessment of mental and emotional states through the inclusion of a behavioral layer in the analysis.

The Collaboration between Nivalit, the University Hospital in Krakow and Medical Research Agency

The Mentalio project, carried out by a consortium of Nivalit Sp. z o.o. and the University Hospital in Krakow, is subsidized from the state budget by the Medical Research Agency as part of a competition for enterprises to develop innovative medical devices based on artificial intelligence for coordinating diagnosis and treatment in outpatient specialized care and hospital treatment (project number 2022/ABM/07/00007 – 00). The project received the highest number of points in the competitive ranking list.

The Nivalit team of engineers that will work on the development of the artificial intelligence algorithm has extensive experience in the design and implementation of AI-based systems and distributed systems. As part of the project, a clinical trial will be conducted by a team of psychiatrists and psychologists led by Maciej Pilecki, MD, PhD, head of the Clinical Department of Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University Hospital in Krakow. The aim of the study will be to assess the effectiveness and safety of a Class IIa medical device based on artificial intelligence algorithms to support the diagnostic process in child and adolescent psychiatry.

The Impact of AI on Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Care

Psychiatry, including child and adolescent psychiatry, is a special field of medicine in which objective medical data (such as the results of the physical examination, laboratory tests or imaging studies) are of limited use in the diagnostic and therapeutic process. Therapeutic and diagnostic decisions are made based on subjective medical data, such as patient-reported difficulties in functioning or changes in behavior. All this places a huge responsibility on the psychiatrist to properly evaluate the medical data, which in turn is crucial in implementing appropriate management.

The development of AI-based clinical decision support tools in psychiatry is critical. Such tools can support clinicians in providing accurate and timely diagnoses, which is crucial for the effective treatment of mental health problems in children and adolescents. With the support of artificial intelligence, clinicians will have access to a clinical decision support system that will help them plan the most effective treatment options for their patients.
